Minister of Trade and Industry and Minister in the Ministry of Finance Mariano Browne

Senator the Honourable Mariano R. Browne was appointed Minister of Trade and Industry on March 9th 2009. In addition to his appointment to the Ministry of Trade and Industry, Minister Browne also handles the portfolio of Minster in the Ministry of Finance and is responsible for the management of the Unemployment Relief Programme. 

Prior to his appointment as a Minister of Government he worked in the field of banking and corporate finance in Trinidad & Tobago and Barbados.  From 2004 to 2007, he was Managing Director of Butterfield Bank (Barbados) Limited, a wholly¬-owned subsidiary of the Bank of N.T. Butterfield & Son (Bermuda) Limited. Minister Browne was also Chief Executive Officer of Caribbean Commercial Bank Limited, a position he held from 1993 to January 2004.

During his tenure in Barbados, Minister Browne held several board appointments in the public and private sectors, including that of Chairman of the Enterprise Growth Fund Limited, Director of the Barbados Stock Exchange and President of the Barbados Bankers Association and President of the Barbados Institute of Banking and Finance.
In Trinidad, Minister Browne held several senior management positions in the banking sector, including being a founding member of an Investment Bank.

His main interests are in the areas of banking and capital market activity in the Caribbean.  He has published and presented several papers on these topics including a paper on “Banking Crises” which was presented at the Plenary Session of the World Congress of Accountants in Paris in 1997. 

Minister Browne is a past student of St. Mary’s College, a graduate of the University of the West Indies, St. Augustine Campus, where he read for a degree in Economics.  He is also a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (U.K.), and holds an MBA in Finance from the Manchester Business School. Minister Browne is also a member of ICAB and ICATT, a former Vice President of ICATT and former treasurer of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Caribbean.
