August 04, 2012: The Ministry of Tertiary Education and Skills Training (TEST) on presented the University of the Southern Caribbean (USC) with $2.5 million to assist in the rebuilding of its main auditorium which was gutted by fire in April. The sum represents a fraction of the $12.2 million promised to the University by TEST. Line minister Fazal Karim said his ministry would also provide capital funding for two residence halls at the USC campus in Maracas, St Joseph, which will have the capacity to house 400 students. He added that the halls can be expected to be completed by January 2014. The day also marked the inauguration of the University's 26th President, Dr Clinton Valley, in a ceremony at the Hyatt Regency Trinidad, Port-of-Spain. Valley takes over from out-going president Trevor Gardner. “We believe that the values-based education you provide is in keeping with national priorities for building character in the youth of this country,” Karim added. Karim noted Valley's passion for wanting to make a difference in the lives of others and his leadership skills. “In you we can attest that form and class is permanent,” he said.
