July, 17, 2012:
The Ministry of Education welcomes the apology to the Minister of Education, Dr the Honourable Tim Gopeesingh, published by the Daily Express. However, the publication of this apology comes 22 months after this newspaper printed erroneous information, misleading the national community on the real cost of the laptops distributed by the Ministry of Education. This is in keeping with the People’s Partnership campaign promise to give each successful SEA pupil a laptop. In the article titled “161 handed over – Laptops jump from $4,000 to $15,000”, written by Aabida Allaham and published by the Daily Express on 30th September 2010, it was incorrectly reported that the cost of each laptop was $15,000, more than three times the real price paid by the Ministry of Education after it entered into an $83 million contract with Hewlett Packard (HP) for the provision of laptops for more than 17,000 Form One students. Today, the Ministry of Education wishes to reiterate its commitment to continue working to improve the education system for the benefit of our nation’s children.
