Prime Minister to attend 33rd Caricom Heads meeting

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar leaves today for St Lucia, to attend the 33rd annual Conference of Heads of Government of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM), under the chairmanship of  Dr. the Honourable Kenny Anthony, Prime Minister of St Lucia. The Conference takes place from July 4th – 6th at Gros Islet.

The Region’s external relations are expected to be a major focus of attention, special guests to the three day summit will include the Secretary General of the Commonwealth His Excellency Kamalesh Sharma, Secretary General of the Organisation of American States, José Miguel Insulza and the Secretary General of the African, Caribbean and Pacific (ACP) States, Dr Mohamed Ibn Chambas. 

Prime Minister Persad-Bissessar will engage in deliberations with Heads on matters concerning the Caribbean Court of Justice (CCJ), the Caribbean Single Market and Economy (CSME) and the restructuring of the CARICOM Secretariat.

Also proposed for consideration by the Heads, are the implications for the Region of on-going Geopolitical and Global Economic Developments, an issue which emerged out of discussions in the margins of the VI Summit of the America, which was held in Colombia in April, 2012.

During the Prime Minister’s absence, the Honourable Errol McLeod, Minister of Labour, Small and Micro Enterprise Development will, will act as Prime Minister.

Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar returns home on Friday evening (July 6th).
