June 04, 2012:

The Ministry of Energy and Energy Affairs, in partnership with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative’s (EITI) Steering Committee will host two Capacity Building Workshops for oil and gas companies and Energy Ministry officials on June 4 and 5 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Port of Spain.

The workshops are sponsored by EITI’s supporting company, Repsol. They are a continuation of a series started in September 2011 which was meant to build capacity among the three stakeholder groups of the EITI revenue reporting process. These stakeholders are Government, Extractive companies and Civil Society. The workshops are held for them to better understand their respective roles and responsibilities.

The first workshop targets the upstream oil and gas companies that are being invited to participate in the EITI implementation and the production of the first EITI Report. The second targets officers of the Ministry who will be responsible for providing much of the revenue data.

The EITI is a global initiative of governments, extractive companies and civil society with the objective of fostering transparency and accountability by companies and governments involved in extractive industries (i.e. oil, gas and mining) through disclosing to citizens the total payments made by companies to government.

Trinidad and Tobago became a member of the EITI in March 2011
