UWI Student Guild Council announces elections results

UWI Student Guild Council President, Hillan Morean, is set to commence his second consecutive term of office at the St Augustine Campus. Hillan emerged victorious in the recently concluded Guild elections, held on Thursday 12th March, 2009 at the John F Kennedy Auditorium, UWI St Augustine.

Other successful candidates in 2009/2010 Student Guild elections were Darren Mitchell (Vice President), Nkese Parris (Secretary), Latoya Lewis (Treasurer), Diana Hosein (International Affairs Chairperson), Trevyn Devonish (Games Committee Chairperson), Rhett Toolsee (Publication Committee Chairperson), Aaron Thomas (National Affairs Chairperson), Ravi Babooram (Student Activities Chairperson), Cherise Algernon (Humanities and Education Representative), Irwin Hackshaw (Social Sciences and Law Representative), Nigel Thomas (Part-time and Evening Student Representative), Aduke Williams (Postgraduate Representative), Orrette Baker (Deputy Postgraduate Representative) and Kandice Gunning (Engineering Representative).

Within the Faculty of Engineering, the Engineering Students Society elections yielded the following results: Amit Seeram (Vice President), Triveni Rajiv Maharaj (Treasurer), Aarti Jagmohansingh (Secretary), Amrit Ramnarine (Students Coordinator), Gina Marie Gosine (Public Relations Officer).

Every student who pays the compulsory annual guild fee of $175 is a member of the Guild of Students. The Student Guild Council is a body of representatives elected by the Guild of Students. Elected students are known as Guild Councilors. The Councilors recognise and voice the needs and concerns of students in the area of academics, extra-curricular activities or general student life. A Guild Councilor is the student representative of a particular committee, faculty or hall of residence. At the St. Augustine campus, the entire council meets at regular intervals to discuss and take action on important student matters.
