The ODPM, as the lead coordinator, continues to work with all first responders and critical agencies to ensure that the adversely affected receive attention and assistance. Citizens, who form part of our special population, are of highest priority to us. These are the differently-abled, the very young, the elderly and pregnant women.
Please note the following:
The Port of City Corporation, Diego Martin Regional Corporation, the San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation and groups from the CEPEP continue to conduct clean- up operations in the affected areas;
The Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is also out assisting with the removal of silt and debris from roads and clogged water courses. The Ministry is also clearing debris from landslides and landslips;
The Ministry of the People and Social Development has been mandated to work with affected residents to complete damage and loss assessments. These assessments are necessary to determine what additional aid can be provided;
The North Diego Martin Community Centre and the Belle Vue Community Centre in St James remain open to facilitate those from the region who have been adversely affected.
We remind citizens of the following clean-up tips:
• Wash down any areas of the home that came into contact with flood waters with a mixture of household bleach and water (25 % bleach to water solution) to reduce surface damage and health problems;
• Wash and dry everything you possibly can after a flood. Wash and dry soaked bedding, towels, and any items of clothing using the hot sanitizing cycle on your washing machine;
• Clean all affected surfaces thoroughly. Wash all surface area damage, such as walls, cabinets, basement floors (include areas that were not in direct contact with flood waters) with the bleach solution. Then wipe down again with plain water;
• Have a professional inspect your plumbing and electrical systems after a flooding event. Replace all filters and switches.
