UTT’s National Robotic Design challenge
The National Robotic Design Challenge, which provides an opportunity for Third to Sixth Form students to participate in an environment that focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for the promotion of new technologies, was launched on Wednesday 12th February, 2020.
The event slated for October, 2020 is being organised by the Design and Manufacturing Engineering Systems Unit of the University of Trinidad and Tobago (UTT) and the first prize this year for the winning school is twenty five thousand ($25,000,00) dollars.
Addressing UTT Officials, teachers and students at the launch held at UTT Chaguanas Campus, the Honourable Anthony Garcia, Minister of Education said when students encounter new technologies, it will give them the upper hand in the global landscape, as the world is becoming increasingly technology-centered.
“Students, I want to encourage each of you to take this opportunity as you prepare for the National Robotics Design Challenge to give yourself the task of thinking, conceptualising and creating something that you have never seen before. There is so much that can be done with the use of technology and robotics and seated among you here today could be the engineer behind a patent that could possibly place Trinidad and Tobago on the global innovation and design market the way in which we are recognised for the Steel Pan. Therefore, I now pose that challenge to you. It is my belief that right here in Trinidad and Tobago, we have the ability to do so much more than has been thought about before.”
Minister Garcia said the Ministry, through its Curriculum Planning and Development Division, (CPDD) and Agencies such as the MIC, students have been exposed to STEM education in the form of the Integrated Arts and Technology Project, the Industry Services Division of the MIC and through added subjects to the CSEC and CAPE compliment such as Gaming and Design and Animation.
The intent of the National Robotic Design Challenge is to promote the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) in education and the development of new technology. This challenge aims at exposing secondary school students to real world engineering in a team environment.
