March 17, 2017:

On behalf of the citizens of Trinidad and Tobago and on his own behalf, Dr the Honourable Keith Rowley has extended condolences to the family of Nobel Laureate, Derek Walcott who passed away today (Friday March 17th) after a long period of illness.

The Prime Minister noted that “Walcott was a prolific writer whose creative works were strongly influenced by Caribbean culture and who also sought to share the West Indian experience with the world. I am deeply saddened by his passing but I am certain that his work, teachings and scholarship will continue to influence a new generation of theatre professionals, writers and poets.”

The world-renowned St Lucian poet, playwright and writer made Trinidad and Tobago his home in the 1950’s. The Trinidad Theatre Workshop, which he founded in 1959, became the avenue through which he brought many of his plays to life while also shaping the artistic careers of many local dramatists. Walcott won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1992.
He will be missed.

May he rest in peace.
