Ministry of National Security officials meet with lifeguards 29.6.2020.

Port of Spain: Ministry of National Security officials led by Permanent Secretary Mr. Vel Lewis met last Wednesday, June 24, 2020 with representatives of the Lifeguard Service and Mr. James Lambert, President of the NUGFW, representing Union for the workers, to continue discussions on issues affecting lifeguards, particularly those assigned to Maracas Beach. The meeting took place at the Ministry’s Head Office on Abercromby Street, Port of Spain. 

Discussions centered on the re-opening of beaches following the lifting of restrictions due to the COVID-19 Pandemic and included the ongoing refurbishment works on lifeguard facilities at Maracas Beach. During the meeting, lifeguards were assured that the Ministry would provide certain additional Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and sanitization materials. The representatives were also advised that the Ministry of Tourism had given completion dates of June 30, 2020 and July 24, 2020 for refurbishment on the Lifeguard Towers and Lifeguard Head Office Building at Maracas Beach respectively. 

Following the meeting, the Permanent Secretary presented a collection of PPE and sanitization products to the Lifeguard representatives for distribution among lifeguard stations. Items included 500 cloth masks, 100 bottles of hand sanitizer, gloves as well as bleach and disinfectant spray. The Union President thanked the Ministry for the gesture on behalf of the Lifeguards and gave an undertaking to continue the Union’s cooperation with the Ministry in securing what was best for all.
