Minister of National Security meets with UNILIREC Officials
Port of Spain: Minister of National Security the Honourable Fitzgerald Hinds M.P. met with officials of the United Nations Centre for Peace and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean (UNLIREC) on Wednesday December 01, 2021. The meeting took place at the Ministry of National Security’s Office at Tower C, International Waterfront Complex, Port of Spain.
Joining the meeting virtually were UNLIREC Director, Ms. Mélanie Régimbal and Monitoring and Evaluation Advisor at UNLIREC, Ms. Maia Hibben.
Ms. Régimbal presented an overview of the collaborative initiatives between UNLIREC, the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) and the Trinidad and Tobago Forensic Science Centre (TTFSC), in the areas of serial number restoration, tracing and ballistics intelligence.
Minister Hinds thanked UNLIREC for the organization’s assistance in the areas of national security. He emphasized his commitment to ongoing projects and welcomed future collaboration.
Discussions focused on joint initiatives planned for 2022, such as policy assistance for the computerization of the firearms licensing system; as well as capacity building for law enforcement and national security officials, specifically in the area of firearm and ballistics analysis.
Also in attendance were Senior Policy Advisor at UNLIREC, Mr. Jason Francis; Deputy Commissioner of Police, Mr. McDonald Jacob; Director (Ag.) of the Trinidad and Tobago Forensic Science Centre, Mr. Derrick Sankar; and Deputy Director, International Affairs Unit, Ministry of National Security, Major (Ret’d) Richard Lynch.
