First Lady pays a Courtesy Call on the Consulate in New York
September 25, 2013:
The First Lady of Trinidad and Tobago, Her Excellency Mrs. Reema Harrysingh- Carmona, paid a courtesy call on the Consul General in New York, yesterday 24th September, 2013. Her Excellency is on an official visit to New York to participate in various ancillary events connected with the United Nations General Assembly which is taking place this week in the “Big Apple”.
Her Excellency took time out of her busy schedule to meet with staff of the Consulate General in New York and had tea with the Consul General, Mrs. Rudrawatee Nan Ramgoolam, Trinidad and Tobago’s Deputy Permanent Representative to the United Nations, His Excellency, Mr. Eden Charles and senior officers posted at the Consulate in New York. Mrs. Carmona’s visit is centered around the 6th Annual World Focus on Autism event. Dr. Natalie Dick, one of Trinidad and Tobago’s leading experts on Autism, will be accompanying Her Excellency to this engagement. Dr. Dick is Chair of the Board of Directors of the National centre for Persons with Disabilities. Her Excellency will also attend a forum on including persons with disabilities in the United Nations Development Agenda as well as the third annual First Ladies and Fashion for Development Luncheon. Her Excellency will also be present in the United Nations General Assembly when Trinidad and Tobago’s National Statement at the General Debate is delivered by the Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago, the Honourable Kamla Persad- Bissessar.
Commenting on Her Excellency’s visit, Consul General Ramgoolam indicated that, “The role of the First Lady on the international landscape is changing. Decades ago, a first lady was required only to be a beautiful, stylish counterpoint to her spouse. In today’s world, she is required to be that and more. She is expected to have her own agenda and vision for the nation under her purview and to raise awareness of causes that are close to her heart. One of Her Excellency’s passion is children, particularly those living with disabilities. With so much attention already being paid to making our global village a more inclusive space for the differently- abled, this General Assembly is the perfect platform to raise awareness for this cause.”
