Culture Minister extends condolences on the death of Shadow
Dr. the Honourable Nyan Gadsby-Dolly, Minister of Community Development, Culture and the Arts joins the national community in mourning the passing of Winston Bailey, ‘The Shadow’.
Minister Gadsby-Dolly expressed that, “Today, we launch CARIFESTA XIV, the premiere Caribbean Arts Festival. It is truly a bitter sweet occasion, as we not only recover from unprecedented flooding, but are confronted on the very same day by the sad irony of losing Winston Bailey, a master artiste, on the cusp of this regional arts and culture celebration".
Winston Bailey,‘The Shadow’ was a singer, musician, performer, composer, poet, and philosopher; his lyrics gave us a glimpse of his core beliefs. Songs such as Everybody is Somebody, Dingolay, Bass Man, Stranger, are considered classics in this land of calypso. ‘The Shadow’ will be remembered for his infectious melody and rhythm, signature dance and black garb. Mr. Bailey has died a few days short of being conferred with an Honourary Doctorate from the University of the West Indies for his contributions as a musical composer; a most deserving accolade.
The Ministry extends condolences to the family, friends and the calypso fraternity on his passing.
